The National Rifle Association

I joined the NRA today. NRA Logo

I should feel like that is enough. No more explanation needed. Not these days though. When talking about what worries me with Obama and the 2nd amendment, I have already heard the phrase “oh, you are one of THOSE people” numerous times…

I was raised around guns. I have guns now. I take them to the range, and I take them hunting. I take care of them, as I hope to pass them down to my kids some day. I don’t see a problem with that, and I really don’t think Obama does either – at least I hope not. Before, I always thought that gun ownership was something I could take for granted, I didn’t really need to send my hard earned money to an association that would lobby for something I already had and didn’t plan to lose. The administration taking office in January has changed that thought; now I want to make sure and give my support to help make sure certain rights that we have as Americans are not taken away in the next 4 years.

From what I have read, there is a good chance that Obama will try to pass laws preventing anyone other than law enforcement from carrying concealed weapons. I am sure a quick read of the latest police reports would verify that those instances where a concealed weapon was used in some way other than personal protection all involved non-law-abiding citizens. Point being, for those of us that obey the law, and want to protect ourselves when necessary - Obama wants to take that right away in order to make the streets safer… Last time I checked the gangs and drug dealers that are causing 99% of the violent crime in America still do not take the time to read what laws Washington is putting into place.

I should also note that I do not have a concealed weapons license - but based on what I am hearing I am thinking about getting one now.

Obama also previously voted in Illinois to raise taxes on guns and ammunition by 500%. Without knowing how he plans on choosing which weapons or shells warrant the extra tax, I cannot pass judgement definitively – but the basic premise of raising taxes to curb crime irks me. Hand out stiffer sentences. Make jail a bad place to be again. Deter crime by making the punishment unbearable, don’t try to deter crime by making it more expensive!!

I am afraid of what Obama might try to do with the 2nd amendment – which is what drove me to join the NRA today.
